Dan Rein, born in Minnesota, has studied and performed Iranian traditional music for the past thirty years. He has studied setar, Kurdish Tanbur and Dutar of Torbat-e Jam (Eastern Iran).  
 
For the past fifteen years he has been composing and improvising music for dutar and singing the poetry of Omar Khayyam  (1048-1131) in Persian and English.
The English translations are the result of his four year collaboration with Mahdi Amadi in creating a new translation of Khayyam’s poetry, publish in 2017.
 
Dan has studied with masters in Iran, Canada, Denmark and the United States. In 1993 he received the Minnesota State Arts Board Apprenticeship grant to study Iranian Radif with Ali Zarrin. Three years later, he received a Jerome Foundation Travel Study Grant to study music in Iran. He has traveled to Iran in 1996 and 2002.   
 
He has released two recordings of the poetry of Omar Khayyam: “Just One Breath” with dutar, bass, washboard, banjo and saw, and “Look at the World” for dutar and voice. 
 
In the past two years he has released two recordings of improvised music for setar and percussion with percussionist Chris Gray. Their group is called Broken Caterpillar. 
 
Chris Gray is aTwin Cities based percussionist who performs with Portal iii (with Charlie Parr & Liz Draper), Doug Otto and the Getaways, Broken Caterpillar (with Dan Rein), the Beavers, and Luke Callen.
 
Dan and Chris will present the poetry of Omar Khayyam sung in Farsi and English, with accompaniment on dutar, dutar Banjo, setar, and percussion.
